WHY I LOVE NEW YORK CITY: #519 Syma

I was fortunate enough to be featured on one of my favorite sites, Why I Love New York City. Since I moved to New York four years ago, I’ve been following this site and have loved the stories people have shared. When asked to write about a special moment in New York  I immediately thought back to my first job in the city, working New York Fashion Week…

Walking into this huge industrial space, I stared at rows and rows of open seats. I could feel my heart quicken as I realized in just a couple of hours I would be surrounded by chaos and impatient guests demanding to be seated. A voice to the right of me shook me from my thoughts as I watched a tall slender woman hurriedly run towards the catwalk, “but I have no make up!” She exclaimed in a curiously familiar accent. Before she turned I instantly knew who it was…. Gisele. There I was, Syma, from Fort Wayne, Indiana just a few feet away from her as she did a rehearsal walk down the runway. She didn’t need any make-up, she was absolutely flawless. It was insane to be around one of the worlds most famous supermodels at the Alexander Wang show. As the lights came down and I went quickly into fashion show mode doing my best intern duties to seat guests, the song “Regulate” by Warren G came on and I thought to myself, “this is the coolest thing I have ever done.

I was fortunate enough to work 12 shows including Marc Jacobs, Diane von Furstenberg, Victoria Beckham and Alexander Wang. It was unreal to actually have contact with some of my favorite fashion influencers like Nina Garcia and to see dynamic duo Anna Wintour and Grace Coddington in action. I was also star struck during the Marc Jacobs show seeing Marc Jacobs himself and Francois Nars. Being a bit beauty obsessed, seeing the creator of Nars cosmetics kind of made my life. And talk about #relationshipgoals when you spot David Beckham seated front row with the kids lit up with pride as he watched his wife’s work come down the runway.

I like to always think back at that time in my life when I start questioning New York. Some days I want to stay in bed and hide from the crowds but then I remember that NYC is the best thing that ever happened to me. Thank you, New York for making me grow up and learn what I can accomplish on my own. It’s true, there’s nothin’ you can’t do when you’re in this city — and I hope I always have that mentality wherever the road takes me.

#THROWBACKTHURSDAY — J. Lo Glow

Just because the weather outside is drab doesn’t mean your skin has to be! For as long as I can remember I have admired Jennifer Lopez’s dewy skin and don’t think anyone’s make-up has ever looked more flawless. (Sorry Kardashians!)

This woman has mastered the glow, or at least her glam squad has. Let me take you back to the “I’m Real Remix” video featuring Ja Rule — have you ever seen anyone wear a fedora and look that amazing with perfectly contoured face and highlighted cheekbones? Didn’t think so. This video was not only a favorite of mine for it’s lyrical genius or Ja Rule’s very on-trend leather baseball hat but it’s basically an anthem. Please feel free to play as you read along to these beauty tips!

Oily skin girls — put down the mattifiers! It’s time to embrace your natural sheen in the right places and those with dry skin I will enlighten you with some go-to products to get close to looking like Jenny from the Block.

  • Post amazing skincare routine (moisturize!), put on your base – a tinted moisturizer or lightweight foundation and mix in a pea sized amount of liquid illuminator, like Nars ‘Orgasm‘ to give a touch of rosey golden glow.
  • Next, take a matte bronzer like Smashbox, Suntan Matte, to contour the face with an angled brush. For this, just swipe the bronzer with a light hand under the apples of the cheeks in an upward motion. Be sure to blend so you don’t get the dreaded stripe so it looks natural. Be sure to brush along your jawline and top of forehead to even out.
  • After bronzer, it’s time to add that signature J.Lo peachy tone to the cheeks. I love Nars ‘Gina‘ blush, it’s a shade that looks really great on a wide range of complexions. Take your blush brush and swirl around the apples of your cheeks again with a light hand.
  • Now time to highlight – most important! With a feather brush, dust a bit of Too Faced ‘Sun Bunny‘ on just the tops of your cheeks — I guarantee this will give you a beautiful shimmer without tacky sparkle.
  • Lastly, take a concealer brush using Benefit Cosmetic ‘Watts Up‘ (a favorite of mine) to add the last touch of glow. Kendall Bennewitz, an NYC based make-up artist says, “only put highlighter on temples, bridge of the nose and tops of the cheeks.”
  • End with a nude lip like Marc Jacobs lip gloss in ‘Sweet Escape‘  and hello — you’re J  to the L – O.

Let’s dance.
