THE SWEATER DRESS: Your Most Unexpected Spring Transitional Piece

_MG_0121-Edit

I honestly haven’t worn a sweater dress since 2007, which was my senior year of high school and probably with a combination of Ugg Boots. (Whatever, you did it too!)

Now when I think “sweater dress,” I picture “soccer mom going out with her girlfriends on the weekend and feeling hot” – this is not my ideal look.

However while browsing one of my favorite sites one day, aritzia.com – I fell in love with their take on the silhouette.

There it was, black, sleek and complete with an edgy hem. I had to have it! I didn’t know a sweater dress could make me say, “damn!” but it did.

I decided to make this look super easy and casual with my over the knee boots — and for some extra texture and warmth, I added my knee-high American Apparel socks. I like that these socks elongate the boots and allow you to show some skin without being over the top. You still get a touch of spring but still keep your legs from freezing as we transiton out of the cooler months. (Thank God!)

I can easily add a heeled bootie for a night out or give my feet a rest and wear these over the knees out on the town. What I love about an over the knee boot is that it gives the illusion of being dressed up but they’re flats so I can literally run to grab a cab or dance all night with ease.

These mirrored sunnies I scored at Urban Outfitters  add that cool girl flare I long for (and not to mention super Instagram worthy). I am all about a mirrored moment right now.

This sweater dress is not only warm, but comfortable and chic – which you might consider an oxymoron, but I speak the truth! I would highly suggest scoring one if you don’t already have it in your closet.

Are you ready to join me in my new found love for sweater dresses? You won’t regret it, I promise.

TEXTURE MIX

Denim, a fuzzy sweater and leather might be my favorite winter combo.

_MG_0351-2_MG_0306-2 _MG_0422 _MG_0385-2_MG_0410

This texture mix is a bit unexpected. It makes it the perfect “model off duty” combination — my favorite look to rock!

I got these leather leggings last year at Aritzia and usually wear them for a night out but wanted to try them out for day time and what better way then wearing them with a great denim jacket?

This one is from American Eagle Outfitters – it is a boyfriend fit which I love. An oversized denim jacket modernizes the look – where so many denim jackets can be awkwardly cropped or too short for most tops. #thestruggleisreal

This one pairs great with this sweater by Babaton (also from Aritzia). I love this shade of cream, it’s super cozy soft and softens my leather leggings.

Throwing on my classic black Converse keeps the look casual with some edge but I can easily add a black bootie for the evening and meet friends out for dinner in no time.

I bet you already have these pieces in your wardrobe which makes this look super easy to recreate.

Are you excited to try this look?

50 shades of grey — almost.

I live in grey. From my wardrobe to my bedroom — it is by far my favorite hue. One look I love is wearing this neutral from head to toe.

This coat I first discovered on Instagram and instantly took a screenshot. After dreaming about it for a week, I purchased at Aritzia and was so excited to wear it.

I wanted an alternative to my black coat this winter, and sometimes being in a sea of puffers around the city can get a little boring — having a statement coat to mix in every now and then is a great way to switch up your look.

I layered my coat with this dream of a sweatshirt I found at Forever 21. Under 20 bucks, I regret not buying two!

My jeans are Denim X — the latest fit from American Eagle Outfitters. They feel so soft, almost like a second-skin. The fabric has a ton of stretch and keeps their form. No one likes a saggy skinny jean!

My shoes are All Saints, I scored them last summer — they have become a staple in my closet and are surprisingly comfortable.

You can easily recreate this look with my picks below — who knew one color could be so versatile  – how will you wear it?

FLORALS FOR FALL? GROUNDBREAKING.

Some might say florals are just for spring (Devil Wear’s Prada) but at Syma Speaks we beg to differ and are loving this trend for his and hers style. I enlisted my favorite Fashionisto friend, John to showcase how the floral trend can work not just for the ladies but for the guys in our life as well.

It takes a confident man to rock a trend like this but when pulled off correctly, it can have dramatic results. Though florals are mainly a warm-weather staple, the designs from the spring and summer 2014 collections were dark — thus making them easy to transition to the cooler months. If you’re not afraid to wear a bold color and fun pattern, put on a pair and match it with your key basic pieces in your closet like denim to balance it out.

Denim is your best bet. I wasn’t sure I could wear my favorite summer dress into the cooler months but layered over my favorite pair of destroyed AEO Jeggings and with my Aritzia trench it was a smooth transition. This look can easily take me from shopping in Soho to brunch with the girls. My boots by Rachel Comey are super versatile and not to mention comfortable when I’m running around the city.

John’s keeping it classic with a denim jacket and white button-down that don’t compete with his amazing Kenzo pants. We just so happened to color coordinate — promise we didn’t plan it. 🙂

Will you wear this trend in time to make Thanksgiving a little more festive? You can do it! Xo, Syma & John

HOW TO BE A WRAP STAR

My absolute necessity for fall is the blanket scarf. I can’t live without it. I purchased my first one a few years ago from Aritzia and decided I needed a fresh one for the season! At first you might wonder, “How does one wear so much fabric?” or “Does it look like I’m wearing an actual blanket?” Have no fear. Here at Syma Speaks, we’ve made our first .gif (#trendy) to show you a few ways to wear this season’s most versatile item.

_MG_0254

1. Easy Breezy – I like this look for a day where I’m not freezing and just want to add some color and texture.

_MG_0196

2. The Shawl – This adds drama. Draped as a shawl, this not only keeps you super warm but plays up on the Kimono trend we’ve been seeing this past summer and the heavier fabric works for the cooler months.

_MG_02183. The Classic – Fashion meets function. Your safest bet to stay warm all winter long. Your scarf tied with an easy loop around your neck won’t go anywhere and is best when you’re running  errands around the city.

_MG_0204

4. Wrap Star – Wearing your blanket scarf like this lets it double as a coat  and you mean business. Your arms might not be handy but who cares – you’re as warm as can be.

_MG_0199

5. Flip It and Reverse It – Take a cue from Missy and wear the reverse side of your blanket scarf  the next time you drape it like a shawl. I’m obsessed with this navy and it gives a whole new feel to this look.

With so many ways to wear it – how will you rock the Blanket Scarf?

Sneaker style has always held a dear place in my heart. I remember in 3rd grade getting a pair of suede navy Vans and being so excited to wear them to school the next day I could hardly sleep. In 7th grade came the adidas Superstar obsession where me and my best friend Jessica had to have a pair.

The excitement holds strong to this day, and living in NYC has given me a whole new appreciation for sneaker style. In the city you’re constantly running around and as the fashion world may look like it’s a sea of women in high heels – it’s not. A good pair of casual street sneakers is key in your wardrobe!

I love the idea of making your sneaker be the statement. In this look I chose to salute Hov and do “all back everything.” These olive green Nike Blazers are from J.Crew and a dear gift from my co-workers. I had my eye on this pair for some time. What’s awesome about this style of sneakers is that you can customize them at Nike, and they come in an endless range of colors – I need them all!

I love the look of a high-top. With a skinny jean you can really show them off and have some fun. I paired my sneaks with a pair of high-rise jeans by Talula at Aritzia, tank from American Eagle Outfitters, leather jacket from this random boutique in Soho and Kate Spade Saturday sunglasses which make me always feel put together. A leather jacket  keeps this look structured so you still feel polished. I also enjoy pairing this type of sneaker with a dress — a bit unexpected and adds that cool-girl edge I love.

From high-top to low-top you can’t really go wrong. This is not the sneaker you are wearing to the gym but could totally work at a Beyonce dance class (a personal favorite activity)!

Are you ready to step up your sneaker game?

#TBT: Do the 90’s again — The Right Way.

Jared Leto you'll always be Jordan Catalano to me!

Hey Jared Leto, I know you won an Oscar and all — but can I borrow that shirt?

Ladies and gentlemen, it’s time to channel your inner “My So Called Life” – the 90’s are back and not going anywhere. However, this time around let’s do it a little better. Less baggy and saggy, let’s actually look put together.

Growing up, my oldest sister did the 90’s to perfection. She had the overall-plaid dress combo, the dark lipstick and high-waisted jeans. It’s pretty crazy to see, but that small dull floral print she loved is now everywhere and you can walk around NYC spotting countless fashionistas with a casually tied plaid shirt around their waists.

It’s time to embrace the trend — but how can you ease in? Just a few easy steps…

1.The Dark Lip

Think updated Claire Danes, also known as “The Lorde”.

For this I’m all about the Nars Pure Matte lipstick in Volga. A little goes a long way, you can do just a touch and gradually build the color to your liking. For a more casual berry lip I like mixing it with a sheer pink for the perfect hint of color.

2. The Doc Martin

red doc martins

I remember going with my sister to buy her first pair of Doc Martins — it was a big day! These shoes can come across super masculine but worn with a dress adds a cool-girl edge and femininity. I enjoy the red for a great contrast with black and easily goes with your blue denim.

3. The Plaid Shirt

Let’s face it — Joan Smalls can make anything look good but here she makes the plaid shirt look easy and effortless! The perfect “model-off-duty” look. Pair your favorite plaid over your go-to distressed jeans and you’re so on trend. AE.com has some great acid wash plaids to get this look.

4. The Crop Top

cropped sweater

Probably my favorite take from the 90’s. I am all about a crop top. In these colder months it’s been a bit harder to work in the trend but with the art of layering — anything is possible! A great cropped sweater will easily transition you from winter to spring and layered over your favorite T or dress is a really easy look to switch things up. Forever 21 makes some great crop sweater options under $20. #backups

How will you do the 90’s trend — again?

BREAKING: Winter is still here.

Yes, this Saturday marks March 1st, and in NYC last weekend we got a taste of 50 degree weather which surprisingly felt like summer. As I sat around with my friends at The Standard wearing only a denim jacket, I thought, “Wow, possibilities are endless, I can’t wait for more spring fashion!” …Then the weather sadly turned on us and we’re back to a mere high of 27 degrees.

Instead of getting all Debbie Downer on you on with this winter weather that somehow won’t leave us – we might as well make the most of the key pieces every Fashionista (hopefully) owns to maximize your style during these colder days.

1. The Over-sized Knit Sweater + Leather Legging

Check Out Our Street Style Snaps from London Fashion Week!

I can’t get enough of this combo. On top you’re casual and relaxed, but add the leather leggings and you’ve easily edged up your ensemble. Model off duy? Nailed it. H&M makes a great option at an even greater price, I would size up to get the over-sized look.

2. Colorful Beanie

Cara Delevigne in red cap, biker leather jacket. #streetstyle

Beanies are a quick and easy accessory that serves as fashion and function. Your mom will be happy you’re staying warm, and a pop of color can easily add a bold statement to your everyday leather jacket, parka or puffer. Borrowed from the boys, this trend is unisex and can be a quick steal out of your boyfriend’s closet! Get the look from ae.com

3. Statement Jacket

Winter Fashion 2014. Don't you just love this pink coat?!

In a sea of puffers and parkas or what I like to call “sleeping bag coats” — a bright jacket is something so out of the ordinary to brighten up any dreary day. I love how this Fashionista paired hers with a cute beanie, over-sized shades and leather pants. Take notes ladies! #screenshotworthy

Get the look from TopShop — dreaming of it now…

4. The Black Ankle Boot

The most versatile item you can own. I wear my black ankle boots with everything! Jeans to skirts to dresses — there’s nothing this shoe can’t go with. I have various styles; flat, heeled, platform — suede to leather to studded, this shoe has endless possibilities. If you don’t own at least one pair, I’m not sure we can be friends. NECESSARY. I’m obsessed with my recent purchase from Sam Edleman, so comfortable and stylish – win-win!

5. The Blanket Scarf

This scarf has saved me the past two winters. Some may say, “Syma — are you wearing a blanket?” but in my mind, haters gonna hate. Put this on and you will basically feel like you’re in Miami, so cozy and warm! You can also wear this scarf as a poncho — who doesn’t want that option? Aritiza, thank you for this.

With these pieces you’ll be sure to turn the sidewalk into a runway — cue street style photographers!

NYFW – Fall/Winter 2014

“Every year the women of New York leave the past behind and look forward to the future… this is known as Fashion Week.”

Carrie Bradshaw said it best. However, now Fashion Week isn’t limited to the women of New York, the runways have never been more accessible thanks to something called the Internet. With top designers giving us live-streams, instagrams and tweets, it’s almost impossible to not see their collection!

Over the weekend, I was loving life watching the Alexander Wang show not from Brooklyn — but on my couch in some very chic sweatpants. It was hard to narrow down my favorites from this Fashion Week but I gained some inspiration from none other than Queen Bey and decided to give you a visual album of my top picks!

Steven Alan — Sea of Neutrals. I could literally live in his entire presentation. Greys, creams and navys — what more could a girl want? I’ll take one of each, thanks. J. Crew — You had me at sequin pants. I am so happy this is still a thing — call me cheesy but I appreciate sequins for far more occasions than New Years. We deserve to sparkle on more days than one! The mix of oversized coats to cool metallics was what we call a dream. Rebecca Minkoff — She always nails that cool girl style. Loving the midi length skirts with sporty jackets — I’m so happy the varsity trend is here to stay! Rebecca Taylor — One collection where I can honestly say I would wear everything! From the cool over-sized coats to sexy short dresses — this is the ultimate wardrobe of the “model-off-duty” and will be my inspiration for the next few months/life. Joie — Menswear. Over-sized. Grey. What more do I need to say? I feel like every woman needs a floor-length coat! It’s all about fashion and function — this coat would give me both! Win-win. Tory Burch — Pleats, high-neck collars, thigh-high socks and a mix of textures were such a statement. I am obsessed with this look! DKNY — All up in my eye. I now am committing to rocking my all black Yankee hat and not letting it sit on the shelf collecting dust. In other words, we can all be Jay Z. Opening Ceremony — You can wear black and blue together. Cobalt clearly isn’t going anywhere — embrace this color that is already in your closet! Victoria Beckham — Let’s face it, we all wanted to be Posh — and we still want to be Posh! I am loving the beautiful white sheer dresses with a classic menswear oxford shoe. Opposites attract. Wes Gordon — Loving the deep V-neck dresses with color-blocking. Maroon and soft blues never looked so good. The mustard yellow dress I am still dying over and would look amazing on a variety of skin-tones. Prabal Gurung — 4 words: Joan. Smalls. Finale. Dress. From bold hues to thigh-high slits — these dresses are for sure to end up on the best dressed list — I can’t wait to see which lucky A-lister will get to rock them! Naeem Khan — Absolutely stunning. A mix of beautifully embroidered dresses to that incredible green feathered gown! Love!
