Hey Jared Leto, I know you won an Oscar and all — but can I borrow that shirt?
Ladies and gentlemen, it’s time to channel your inner “My So Called Life” – the 90’s are back and not going anywhere. However, this time around let’s do it a little better. Less baggy and saggy, let’s actually look put together.
Growing up, my oldest sister did the 90’s to perfection. She had the overall-plaid dress combo, the dark lipstick and high-waisted jeans. It’s pretty crazy to see, but that small dull floral print she loved is now everywhere and you can walk around NYC spotting countless fashionistas with a casually tied plaid shirt around their waists.
It’s time to embrace the trend — but how can you ease in? Just a few easy steps…
1.The Dark Lip
Think updated Claire Danes, also known as “The Lorde”.
For this I’m all about the Nars Pure Matte lipstick in Volga. A little goes a long way, you can do just a touch and gradually build the color to your liking. For a more casual berry lip I like mixing it with a sheer pink for the perfect hint of color.
2. The Doc Martin
I remember going with my sister to buy her first pair of Doc Martins — it was a big day! These shoes can come across super masculine but worn with a dress adds a cool-girl edge and femininity. I enjoy the red for a great contrast with black and easily goes with your blue denim.
3. The Plaid Shirt
Let’s face it — Joan Smalls can make anything look good but here she makes the plaid shirt look easy and effortless! The perfect “model-off-duty” look. Pair your favorite plaid over your go-to distressed jeans and you’re so on trend. AE.com has some great acid wash plaids to get this look.
4. The Crop Top
Probably my favorite take from the 90’s. I am all about a crop top. In these colder months it’s been a bit harder to work in the trend but with the art of layering — anything is possible! A great cropped sweater will easily transition you from winter to spring and layered over your favorite T or dress is a really easy look to switch things up. Forever 21 makes some great crop sweater options under $20. #backups
How will you do the 90’s trend — again?
